The Specificities of Indigenous Spaces at U of T

March 27, 7-9pm

OISE Nexus Lounge.

This special event aims to explore Indigenous people’s designs for campus space. It was organized with The List in the spirit of building coalition, and as a step towards the reparative work the TRC process demands of the University and its many communities. The evening will involve Indigenous faculty, staff, fellows, and students – and others who might take up these roles if our institutions had already undertaken the work of decolonization. Indigenous knowledge keepers, artists and educators will come together to share ideas for what campus space could look like. The event will take the form of a ‘fishbowl’: invited participants will begin in the middle of the space with the audience around them listening. People from the audience will then be invited into the middle of the fishbowl to share back what they heard.

The List :: October 29 :: Precarity on Campus

The list is a monthly social space for progressive faculty at the University of Toronto, and friends. The name is derived from the email list that brought faculty together during the 2015 CUPE strike to speak out for a more equitable and accessible university. We look forward to continuing the conversation.

The first event of the list was fantastic! More than 130 people gathered for some good conversation and great music. The next event of the list is OCTOBER 29 addressing the theme of PRECARITY ON CAMPUS.

The night will be facilitated by Melanie Newton (History; Director of Caribbean Studies @ U of T). We will enjoy a special intimate presentation ‘Ayotzinapa. The planted seeds’ by internationally celebrated Mexican artist Marcos Ramirez ERRE marcosramirezerre.com. We are also fortunate to have Nik Redman (Steelworkers) and Erin Black (CUPE, Unit 3) reflecting on these issues as they are lived on our campus.

Students challenge ‘continuity planning’ in conversation with Dean Cameron

Dear Colleagues,

We were just sent this youtube link, where some courageous undergraduate students took very seriously this part of the memo they were sent yesterday from FAS:

“This is a trying time for students. We recognize that. We will answer your questions, provide advice on the best course of action, and make every effort to minimize the impact of the strike on the achievement of your academic goals.
David Cameron, FRSC”

Completing the term: a message from the Dean (FAS letter to undergraduates of March 23, 2015)

From: A&S Office of the Dean
Sent: Monday, March 23, 2015 8:20 PM
To: Undergraduate Students in the Faculty of Arts and Science
Subject: Completing the term: a message from the Dean

Dear Arts & Science Undergraduate Students,

I am very sorry, as I am sure you are, that members of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 have rejected the tentative agreement put forward by their bargaining team. Unit 1 members in Arts & Science remain on strike, and the Faculty will be deprived of the benefit of their work. I know that this has been a stressful and frustrating period for many of you, and I deeply regret that the disruption in your academic studies caused by this labour dispute will continue.

Nevertheless, it is the goal of the Faculty of Arts & Science to ensure that you will be able to complete your courses and progress in your degree, and that those who are on track to convocate in June will be able to graduate. This will be the top job for the Faculty of Arts & Science in the weeks ahead.

Minutes from the Emergency UT Faculty Town Hall Meeting, Friday March 20th

Minutes: Emergency UT Faculty Town Hall Meeting, Friday March 20th, 2015

2117 Sidney Smith 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Summary:

Approximately 80 people attended this meeting; attendees were primarily faculty, but also included a small number of sessional instructors.  There were a few unit 3 members in attendance, who raised some of the most pressing concerns about academic freedom and integrity in the context of their precarious employment. Some CUPE Unit 1 members were invited to provide updates on the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 general meeting/vote to send the tentative agreement to general membership for ratification  (which started at 3 p.m. and was still ongoing when the town hall concluded).

After a brief welcome and accounting for the funds raised and spent on the Toronto Star advertisement, discussion centred around two issues: first, the pressures being placed on instructors and administrators (as well as students and staff) by “continuity planning” , and how we could respond (individually and collectively) to those pressures; and second, how we might identify and challenge the broader structural issues that are facing the University in an ongoing way.  We are hopeful that meeting attendees and others will now take the lead on organizing our next steps.
